Dear
Kelly :
In our nearly five years of involvement with the field of Safe Patient Handling & Movement, we have yet to encounter posters designed to motivate nurses and caregivers to use available equipment (or, perhaps ever more important, designed to encourage staff to use any means available to avoid injuries which can result from manual lifting). The Safe Lifting Portal does make available a number of related items, for example screen-savers and cafeteria tent cards, but we have not yet encountered an input that requested development of motivational wall posters to aid in the quest to prevent nursing injuries.
When the concept of providing motivational posters first arose during the first few months of our existence, we encountered resistance from several of our consulting nurses who observed that most hospitals do not allow posting of such materials for a number of reasons, such as aesthetics, multi-language requirements, etc. That resistance caused us to shy away from designing and printing posters and offering them to our Safe Lifting Portal visitors (either free or for a token shipping charge).
Perhaps we over-reacted by dropping the project? At any rate, your question again raises the issue whether SOME hospitals and nursing homes might want to take advantage of availability of free posters (non-technical, non-commercial in nature) as part of their efforts to drive down nursing injuries. The Lift Doctor will take this opportunity to again raise this issue with our sponsoring company’s management. Perhaps the time has come to finally take that step and make available a selection of motivational posters.
Stay safe,
The Lift Doctor* |
