Repositioning: Repositioning a patient in bed with a lift strap

Question

How would I use the lift strap to reposition a patient in bed?

Answer

Dear Holly:

The Lift Doctor does not recommend using Lift Straps to reposition a patient in bed. Basically, these products are designed to assist caregivers in lifting and holding parts of the patient’s body to facilitate examination, care and treatment. The straps can also be used for turning a patient in bed and supporting the patient in a lateral position. Instead of performing these tasks manually, the nursing staff can use the straps together with a lift and thereby avoid heavy and harmful strains. Finally, the straps can be used in combination with either with mobile or overhead lifts.

Suitable application areas for lift straps include:

  • Treatment of wounds, e.g. burns
  • Hygiene care
  • Procedures, e.g. catheterization
  • Examination
  • Positioning for bedpan
  • Dressing/Undressing
  • Turning sideways.

Stay safe,

The Lift Doctor*
