Assuming the gait belt is properly applied, (i.e., not too tight nor too loose) the Lift Doctor does not believe it would be harmful to the member. If your trainers or associates feel it gives them better control, then the technique should be allowed. You might also wish to investigate using the newer types of transfer belts that are emerging onto the market. They are designed for use in transfers from sitting to standing, from sitting to sitting, or as support when standing/walking. The newer belts have grasp-friendly handles that provide better basis for ergonomically correct work posture compared to earlier gait belts.
